Tips You Should Know About Air Tools

Unplanned downtime costs manufacturers almost $1 trillion every year. Due to subpar care, even the finest air-bearing products are bound to fail before their best-by date. Prematurely replacing an air tool doesn’t just cost money, but the void it leaves also affects your bottom line.

Here are some tips to help you maintain and keep your Hovair Systems products in running order.

Run at Regular Pressure

Most air tools are operated at a normal air pressure of 60–125 psi. Exceeding this limit might work for you at that moment, but it may slowly damage the internal parts of your equipment.

Exceeding the tool’s pressure capacity may also rupture the hoses, leading to damage or workplace accidents.

Maintain FRL Functions

FRL is short for filter, regular, and lubricator. These three are essentially holding your air tool together.

  • Filter: Your air filter keeps the dirt and debris out of the tool.
  • Regulator: Your regulator is responsible for regulating the air pressure.
  • Lubricator: The lubricator oils your cogs and wheels, preventing friction and overheating.

Your FRL system is connected to your tool through a hose. Its length may vary depending on the manufacturer. As for the FRL system, you must check it before using the machine; clean your filters and vents weekly and use a lubricant recommended by the company.

Don’t leave an air tool lying around after it’s served its purpose for the day. Your workspace is more likely to be dusty after a day’s work. That or the cleaning crew might come in, and the dust may fly and enter your tools or, at the very least, clog your air filters.

Keep the debris and moisture away from your tools by capping any inlets that may allow penetration and storing them in a clean and dry place.

Never Skip Regular Maintenance

The above tips should keep your tools spick and span, but wear and tear is inevitable for all material handling equipment. The only way to not let it result in downtime: invest in regular maintenance whether or not the parts are functioning properly.

  • Replace your air and oil filters after using them for 1000 hours.
  • Change the lubricant every 4000–8000 hours or whenever the manufacturer recommends.
  • Replace any underperforming belts.
  • Lubricate your motor bearings every 2000 hours.
  • Change your separator element when changing the lubricant.
