Key Considerations for Oversized Loads & Wide Loads

Driving a transport vehicle is already risky, but hazards increase dramatically when excessively large loads are involved. Transporting them is not easy, regardless of the distance. It can be challenging and frustrating since there are so many factors to think about, like traffic, load limits, and schedule constraints. One small mistake and you could end up in an accident with costly legal liabilities.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re going to be driving a truck with an oversize load:

Flatbed load restrictions set by law

Shipping restrictions in the United States are well-established anduniform across the country. The legal transport load is no wider or taller than 8.5 feet (102 inches) in most states. The average length allowed by law is between 48 and 53 feet, and the maximum possible weight is 46,000 pounds. The typical maximum weight capacity for a truck is 46,000 pounds, while some can carry more.

How to tell if a load is too big

Changing a load’s dimensions can sometimes bring it within the oversize load limits. This is because these limits are assessed on a per-axle basis. More often than not, though, it’s the width that causes a load to be too oversized. All loads with dimensions greater than 8.5 feet in width or height are considered oversize. Oversize cargo drivers are required to have a special permit.

Flatbed drivers should remember that they are responsible for securing the necessary authorization. Oversize permits can’t be issued for loads that can be effectively adjusted in size or weight.Three trucks on the side of a road. When to use travel escorts

Shipments wider than 12 feet require escorts (sometimes called “pilot cars”) to legally travel through several states. The total cost of transporting goods would include not only the variable per-mile fee but also the accessorials, such as lodging and meals.

Travel escorts are there to alert flatbed drivers to any unusual conditions they may encounter along the route, such as road congestion, construction zones, low wires, bridges, or accidents. They are also there to warn pedestrians when a heavy vehicle is nearby.

Make room for possible schedule constraints

Oversized loads accompanied by travel escorts are typically restricted to operating half an hour before dawn and after dusk, Monday through Friday. Driving is often prohibited or heavily restricted on weekends and holidays in many US states.

Heavy load movers need permits from each state they will be passing through, and these permits must include the precise routes they will be taking. Shippers face new hurdles in meeting deadlines because of all these reasons, but notably due to the constraints on driving time.

Invest in air bearing systems for heavy load handling

Here at Hovair Systems, we have experts who can design, engineer, and set up various heavy load handling systems, both manually and automatically.

Our expertise is unrivaled as we are the first licensees of the General Motors Air Bearing Patent. Our air bearings, casters and other products use simple compressed air as their power source, allowing us to provide superior load-moving systems.
